My tiny intro
Hi, I’m Allison. I’m 43 years old, I was born, raised and am living in Calgary, and I have a 14-year-old daughter and a 10-month old son. I am also a Canadian online entrepreneur running my own web design studio.
Here’s my story… starting from somewhere in the middle… because 43 certainly isn’t the beginning and sure as hell isn’t the end!
My dirty little secret
First, I need to unveil my dirty little secret. Here goes… are you ready? I have a baby. That’s right! He’s 10 months old and adorable. He’s also learning to eat and walk and he’s a complete mamma's boy and a bit of a handful.
I’m not sure why I have trouble telling potential clients that “I’m a mom. I’m also a web designer. I make it work. It may not always be graceful, but I’m committed. I hope you still want to work with me.”
In fact, a client fired me the other day. Part of me thinks it’s because of the baby. And it may well be. As a mom of a wee one, I just can’t work 24/7. My hours are in fact inconsistent and oddball. I can’t promise same-day delivery or even next day delivery.
Running a business and being a mom of a baby is tough. Let’s not sugar coat it.
This would be why many moms (in fact, every local mom I know) opts for the “go back to work / child care” solution.
Even my own mom suggested putting my baby Damian into a drop-in day care a few hours a week. (Seriously mom?!)
However, I already did that with my older daughter who is now 14. I decided back then in 2003 that dealing with the ins and outs of looking after small children wasn’t something I enjoyed. I eagerly looked for a daycare that I liked and I didn’t regret it either. At that time I was busy growing my first web design company and I was all in.
This time is different. 14 years later, I am blessed with a second baby and my mindset is completely different. I want to be the one raising my son. I want to share everything with him. I don’t want to miss a moment of his development. I feel there’s things that not just anyone can teach him, but that I need to teach him. And not all of it can be taught with words. Part of it is the importance of just being near him energetically. I was not this aware before with my daughter.
Anyhow, there it is. I’m a mom AND I’m a female Canadian online entrepreneur. I am the designer of my work life so that it fits perfectly into my ideal life. I don’t need to make compromises any more. I truly can have my cake and eat it too.
And you can too. I’ll share my experiences with you and I hope they will help you design your own life free of guilt or shame. Let’s work together to bring the divine feminine back into the world. On our terms. We can do it!
